North Coast & The Drive Home

Left Boquerón heading back to San Juan via the northern route. Stopped at a beach near Arecibo for a car nap. Hours of coastline. Back to the capital by evening.

The Northern Route

I didn’t retrace my route. Left the southwestern corner — Boquerón, El Poblado, the bartender, all of it — and took the northern road back toward San Juan instead. It opened up differently than the way out. Less highway, more towns. More of the actual Puerto Rico that sits between the tourist checkpoints.

Drove for a couple hours and the landscape kept changing on me. Mountains down to coast, back up to mountains. The kind of road where you stop noticing time in miles and start noticing it in the color of the sky.

The Beach at Arecibo

Found a beach somewhere between Arecibo and the next town over. Not famous, not on anybody’s must-see list. Just a beach that was there, and I was there, and the ocean didn’t care one way or the other about either of us.

Pulled in. Sat in the car. Took a nap.

That’s the whole thing. No performance, no photo-op setup, no story I was quietly assembling to tell later. Just a body that needed rest, a car that could give it that, and a beach that didn’t judge the call.

Back to San Juan

Woke up and started driving again. More hours of coastline and small towns, the road tightening up as it pulled me back toward the capital. I was back in the city by evening. Showered off the salt and the car-sleep.

Saturday Night

Tried a few places. Stopped at Oasis, skipped the tapas. Checked out Macarena and a queer bar next door and left both of them bored. Some nights the energy just isn’t where the guidebook swears it’ll be, and the skill is not forcing it.

Ended up at Club Toxic, then Purgatorio — a bare-style bar that was great even though it wasn’t packed. The kind of place where the vibe doesn’t depend on a crowd. Met people, moved around, followed the energy to where it actually was instead of where I figured it should be.

Being willing to leave what isn’t working — that’s most of the practice, honestly.
