About

The script

Most travel blogs sell you a fantasy. This one sells you the receipt.

I’m Alán. I travel solo, I follow impulses instead of itineraries, and I write about what actually happens — the speeding tickets, the nights that turn out mid, the moments that crack you open and the ones that just break.

Al garete is Puerto Rican slang for adrift — a boat with no oars, at the mercy of the current. It’s how I travel. It’s how I write. It’s pretty much how I’m learning to live.

What you’ll find here

Field notes from solo trips. Photos that weren’t shot for the grid. Honest write-ups of what it’s like to move through a place without a script, and what it costs when the place pushes back. Last-minute bookings, hostels, short stints, no fixed plan.

Traveling with me

Sometimes I take people along. I do the planning, you cover the logistics, and we go somewhere real. If that sounds like you, the details are on the Travel With Me page.

If you just want to talk — trip planning, lifestyle design, radical honesty, what it looks like to follow your own current — reach out there too.

The current takes you exactly where you need to go — but only if you’re brave enough to let go of the oars.
